The plot is entirely driven by coincidences and deus ex machina. Over and over, the characters randomly bump into the exact person they need to meet to advance the plot. Over and over, the author puts the characters into situations that are inescapable and unbeatable, and seemingly cannot figure out how to write their way out of these situations, and so cheats to fix things. The worst example is when the main characters are attacked by an army they 100% cannot defeat; a minor character suddenly reveals herself to be basically omniscient (that's not an exaggeration) and with apparently unlimited resources, and so has already arranged it so that the problem just goes away. This sort of thing happens in several key places.

I suspect this issue arises because the main characters are all Superman - they are each inhumanly good, the best in the world at what they do - and so the only way to generate conflict is to put them into absurdly impossible situations. But, once you've put people into absurdly impossible situations, you can only get them out with absurd solutions. This sort of kills the dramatic tension to me. It was a fun enough read, but totally unsatisfying when I thought even a little about what I'd read. I have no interest in reading further adventures of this group.

Traitor Blade Sebastien De Castell 9781848663794 Books Reviews

This was a solid debut for me. I enjoyed the banter and the swashbuckling sword fights. Falcio is clever and his speeches were rousing (in a kind of manipulative kind of way) but I did get swept up emotionally so I decided to give the rest of the series a try. I should have stopped with the first one. The first one is enjoyable enough but in the subsequent books the author shows his weakness in writing female characters— seriously, he’s about on par with George Lucas and Patrick Rothfuss on this one.

****spoilers****

Already, in this debut novel we have the rape of Falcio’s wife but it’s written in a vague enough way that I was able to gloss it over with the excuse that this rape was realistic for the feudal system being depicted. But then we meet the character of Ethalia who is a prostitute healer who uses the sexual act to draw the darkness out of Falcio. At this point I’m still somewhat charmed by the banter so I let that pass too. But it just gets worse in book two. Never for a minute do I buy Falcio’s supposed love for Ethalia- I cringed every time he talked about the crinkles around her eyes. And the character arcs given to Valiana and Aline ring just as false. Its like the author wanted to insert some strong female characters into the story but didn’t actually believe in it enough himself. Because I as a reader did not find it believable.

I know this is supposed to be a review of the first book so I’ll stop there. The first book is enjoyable enough if slightly problematic bu I would still recommend it. However, be aware that the following book is again enjoyable enough but the problems become far more glaring such that I lost any desire to continue with the series.
Fast paced, first person fantasy is rare. Because it's HARD. Weaving plot threads is a challenge when readers have only one perspective from which to see a tale, or appreciate a character. This is why well written, engaging, GOOD first person fantasy is rare.

Traitor's Blade is good first person fantasy. Taking inspiration for character and dialogue from The Three Musketeers, while never compromising on originality, with prose that would hold up next to that of Glenn Cook or Roger Zelazny...Traitor's Blade is an under the radar gem of a tale.

The book gets four stars from me. My highest rating for books that Excel within their genre or field. (I reserve my rare 5 star reviews for books that utterly defy definition or warp.gwnres or reader expectations while ALSO excelling). Blade takes it's foot off the gas just a little Midway through, and suffers just a tad for that...but it's worth the wait.

This.is low low magic, high fantasy (the best kind) from the first person, done right. Highly recommended for fans of Talion Revenant, Roger Zelazny, the Ryryia Chronicles, Mark Lawrence and Joe Abercrombie...and of course, Dumas. Well worth the read.
"Pretend for a moment that you have attained your most deep-seated desire. Not the simple, sensible one you tell your friends about, but the dream that's so close to your heart that even as a child you hesitated to speak it aloud." This is the opening line to Sebastien De Castel's Traitor's Blade series.

Many other reviews have compared this to Dumas's Three Musketeers. They carry rapiers, and there are three of them, but to me that is as far as the comparison ends. This is more in the same vein as Game of Thrones if one must make comparisons.

Set in the fantasy world of Tristia, the Greatcoats are traveling harbringers of justice. Think US Marshals with swords. They travel the providences, Hearing cases and meting out Justice often, to the chagrin of the governing Dukes. Well, this is what they used to do. Now the King is dead and Tristia is an array of city-states each with their own laws and ways of justice.

Falcio Val Mond, Kest Murrowson, and Brasti Goodbow were once Greatcoats, now they are body guards for caravans. They are hated, and scorned everywhere by both nobility and peasantry alike. Just three men trying to make their way in the world. Then the world is shattered once more for them and so begins our story...

What a wild ride this book is. One narrow escape after another. Dazzling swordplay, wit, humour and heart break make an amazingly fun adventure. Halfway through the first book I had to order the other three, because I did not want to take a break from the further adventures these Adventurers.

I compare it more to Game of Thrones A) because it is, for all intents, a Fantasy adventure B) the political maneuvering C) Lots of cursing and sex, and brutality, D) The subtle use of magic. More Alchemaical than fireballs from wands.

A fast paced fun book. Already a 100 pages into the second, Knights Shadow. (Followed by Saints Blood, and Tyrants Throne.) Highly recommended. (less)
